Plurals
When you are talking about more than one thing, the word for "the" is i before most masculine nouns, gli before masculine nouns beginning with "z" or "s" plus another consonant and before masculine nouns beginning with a vowel, and le before all feminine nouns:
i cappelli the hats
le gonne the skirts
gli impermeabili the raincoats
gli studenti the students
To make nouns plural, you usually change the last vowel to "i" if the noun is masculine and to "e" if it is feminine. All nouns ending in "e" change to "i":
la strada the street
le strade the streets
il libro the book
i libri the books
la chiave the key
le chiavi the keys
il fiore the flower
i fiori the flowers
